Let the Games Begin
Pretend City Children’s Museum will be having its own Olympic-style opening ceremony Friday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. with the debut of its Pretend Café featuring a Daphne’s California Greek exhibit while giving children the opportunity to participate in a child-sized Torch Run and lighting of the torch in the city center. For the next six weeks, the museum will display flags from each country, kids can pretend at awards podium for photo opps with medals, and learn about staying active and healthy.
The Pretend Café featuring Daphne’s California Greek exhibit is a mini Daphne’s California Greek eatery where children can play various roles: serving up pretend pita bread sandwiches with gyro and tzaziki sauce, running the cash register, or being a pretend guest at the café. Parents can learn about the healthful benefits that a Mediterranean-inspired diet offers their family. Mediterranean-inspired California cuisine can be healthy and easy, just by incorporating flavorful fish and poultry, herbs and spices, whole grains, nuts and yogurt.
Pretend City Children’s Museum is at 29 Hubble in Irvine. http://www.pretendcity.org.
For the Youth
Know an exceptional local youth leader? Youth Service America and Festival of Children Foundation are collaborating with the National Child Awareness Month Ambassador Program to seek out nominations for a youth ambassador now through Sunday, July 29. The initiative is offering outstanding service-minded teens and young adults funding, training and resources to lead large-scale service projects to provide positive change in their communities.
Youth Ambassadors can craft campaigns that address child welfare issues like access to affordable healthcare, the drop-out crisis or child safety laws. Organizations, community groups and adult mentors can choose a 16 to 22 year old to represent their state and serve as a Youth Ambassador.
